WWW proxy servers speed up the access to web based resources by storing "local" copies of frequently accessed web sites. Instead of having to reconnect to a slow webserver, after the first view, the web page can often be served from the proxy cache rather than the server of origin. This can result in much faster page views. The proxy server, proxy.uoregon.edu is set up to store more than 100Gb of remote web pages, increasing the performance of your web browsing.
The proxy servers are set up to serve machines that connect to the UO campus network only. Enabling proxy settings on machines that migrate to other networks (laptops, etc.) is not recommended , as it's likely to break web browsing when off-campus.
